New in 2001! Drum is an American Saddlebred
mare, 16-18 years old and trained to drive. Whiskey is a Palamino gelding,
15-16 years old. Both are well-trained and used to one another. After
a 4-hour examination, the vet gave them a good bill of health. Since then,
we've had their teeth floated, vaccinations and deworming as well as the
first course of work on their feet by the ferrier.

February 2001: Another ice storm... not as bad as 1998 but enough to make thin trees sag and weak trees snap. With their thick winter fur, the horses don't seem bothered by it though. Until our fields were ready for grazing, the horses stayed at the farm where they've been living — about 5 minutes away. We rode them here in early June and they seemed to fit in right away. While Eric was busy building their new residence, they hung around and munched. We've equipped ourselves with Australian saddles and spent many happy hours on the forest trails and paths mowed in the fields. May through January 2002: Building a simple shelter grew
into a major construction project. We now have a new 50x20 foot building
— complete with running water, a heated drinking fount, 2 box stalls with
sliding doors, recessed lighting in the ceiling... Although Eric always
wanted to construct a building, he never quite expected it to be a horse
barn! |
